What to expect on the day
A Mount Fuji day trip is a long but rewarding day. You will leave Tokyo early, spend a couple of hours on the road, and stop at viewpoints, the 5th Station and usually Hakone or a lake. There is some walking on uneven ground, time at altitude where it is cold and windy, and plenty of photo stops. Knowing what to bring makes the difference between a great day and a chilly, fumbling one.
Clothing and footwear
- Layers. The 5th Station is 15 to 20 degrees colder than Tokyo. Bring a warm jacket even in summer.
- Comfortable walking shoes with grip for gravel paths and viewpoints.
- A hat and sunglasses, the high altitude sun is strong.
- A compact rain layer, mountain weather changes fast.
Essentials to carry
- Cash. Many small shops, shrines and lockers are cash only.
- Your passport or ID and your tour confirmation on your phone.
- A charged camera or phone and a power bank.
- Water and a few snacks for the road.
What is usually included
Most guided tours include transport, an English speaking guide and the main entries on the route. Lunch is sometimes included and sometimes a paid stop, so check the listing. A private Mt Fuji tour often adds hotel pickup and a flexible lunch stop, while shared bus tours follow a set route with free time at each stop.
Realistic expectations
Fuji may be partly hidden by cloud, especially in summer, so treat a clear summit as a bonus rather than a guarantee. Bring patience for traffic on busy weekends, and remember that the views from the lakes and Hakone are spectacular even when the peak is shy.
